Jonathan Trappe from Raleigh, North Carolina is a 39 years old IT Manager and Adventurer who is going to try to float across the Atlantic Ocean for 2500 miles using 365 helium balloons in around 7 days at a height of 18000 feet to 25000 feet. Since there is practically no direction control, although he intends to fly from Caribou, Maine to Paris, France – he might as well end up in Norway, North Africa or crash into the sea! For safety, he’ll be covered by a canopy and the floating basket will also become a lifeboat if needed.
Jonathan’s inspiration is the Pixar movie UP in which an old man floats his entire house up into the air using balloons. The first balloon was flown in Paris in 1783. Jonathan Trappe is the only person to cross the English Channel by cluster balloon in May 2010. He also flew over the Alps in 2011 – and making the trans-Atlantic journey using 365 helium balloons is his ultimate goal.
